Student-Athlete Information

Pre-Participation Examination

Occidental College Department of Athletics requires all varsity student-athletes to receive medical approval from Occidental College sports medicine personnel annually, BEFORE they are permitted to attend any practice, strength and conditioning session and/or compete in any intercollegiate athletic event. The pre-participation physical examination must be reviewed and approved by an Occidental College team physician. No student athlete will be cleared for athletic participation, nor will Occidental College provide insurance coverage to any student-athlete who has not completed the pre-participation examination process. A health screening examination prior to the start of participation in intercollegiate athletics is a medical, legal and ethical obligation of Occidental College.

Each athletic team will be assigned a time to report to the Athletic Training Facility to complete the health screening process. The following forms must be completed by each athlete and will be reviewed at this time.

  • Incoming Freshman & Transfer Athletes must have the Occidental College Sports Physical Form completed and submitted to Emmons no later than Friday August 6th, 2010
  • Returning Athletes do not need a new physical at the beginning of each year, however, they must attend their team’s assigned physical time where they will complete the Athletic Health Status Questionnaire.
  • All Athletes will complete the Emergency Medical form, Risk Assumption and Release, and Student-Athlete Injury and Concussion Statement at their team's assigned physical time.

Insurance

Athletic accident insurance is provided by the College for the benefit of student athletes. Additional information regarding insurance coverage may be obtained from the College Business office. Student athletes are covered by a combination of three policies:

  • Primary Coverage: All students are covered by a policy under United Healthcare as part of their tuition package. This policy covers intercollegiate athletic injuries up to $4,000.
  • Secondary or Excess Coverage: The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics provides coverage on an “excess” basis only ($4,000- $65,000). Under terms of the policy, this coverage is considered to be excess to all other valid and collectible medical insurance policies. Most notable would be parental insurance coverage under which the student athlete is covered as an eligible dependent.
  • Catastrophic: The college carries a catastrophic insurance plan, covering the claims in excess of $90,000 through the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Each athlete should complete the Insurance Information form and mail it back to the Athletic Training Department prior to the beginning of the academic school year.  Updated information should be resubmitted if coverage changes.

Reporting Injuries or Illness

Any student-athlete that sustains an injury must immediately report the injury to one of the college’s full time Certified Athletic Trainers. If an athlete fails to report an injury and seeks medical attention outside of the college’s services, any expenses that accrue are the sole responsibility of that student-athlete.

If an injury should occur to a student-athlete while traveling off-campus with their respective team, the head coach should obtain assistance from the hosting Certified Athletic Trainer on site of the event. The head coach and student-athlete should be in contact with Occidental staff members at his/her earliest opportunity.
