Tiger Sweep: Anderson, Williams Named SCIAC Athletes of the Week

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2009) – Tigers swept
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of
the Week recognition’s for the week of Jan. 18-25 as
Sean Anderson and Dior Williams
led Occidental to 2-0 weeks for the men and women,
respectively.
Anderson was a huge reason the Tigers upset Whittier on Wednesday
night with a 17-point, 18-rebound double-double adding three
assists, a block and a steal as Oxy came from behind to win 68-60.
He followed up on Saturday shooting 5-for-8 from the field and
2-for-2 from the charity stripe to pitch in 12 points while
grabbing four rebounds, three steals and supplying a block in
limited action against Caltech. Overall in the two games he
averaged 14.5 points and 11 rebounds per game and is currently
shooting 52.5% from the field overall this season to lead the
team.
Leading the Tigers to a 2-0 week with wins over Whittier and
Caltech was Williams, a junior who returned to the court after an
injury sidelined her in 2007-08. She played an integral role this
week for Oxy averaging 19.5 points per game while supplying the
Tigers with nine assists and 11 steals (eight against Whittier).
Williams shot 85% from the field, going 8-for-10, against WC
(hitting her only shot from long range) and 9-for-10 against the
Beavers in just 14-minutes with three breakaway lay-ups off steals.
She currently leads the team in scoring (11.4 ppg) and steals (60)
and is second with 40 assists.
The men are currently knotted in a four-way tie for second place in
the conference with a 4-2 mark while the women meet co-leader La
Verne on Thursday evening with 5-1 records to determine the top
spot at the mid-way point of the season.
Both teams will play at home in Rush Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 31
with the women tipping off at 5:00 p.m. against the University of
Redlands before the men take the court at 7:30 p.m. to face the
Bulldogs.
