2012 FALL SCHEDULES RELEASED
LOS ANGELES — The Occidental College 2012 fall sports schedules are set.
The biggest consistent addition is the inclusion of Chapman as a SCIAC opponent, increasing the number of league contests in many sports and moving up the start dates of conference play.
Below are a few notes about each Oxy team’s opponents with links to their full schedules.
2011 Men’s Finish: SCIAC Champions, NCAA Division III West Region Champions
2011 Women’s Finish: Third in SCIAC, Fourth in the West Region
First SCIAC Race: Oct. 12 SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet at La Mirada, 4 p.m.
Don’t Miss: SCIAC Championships on Oct. 29 at Prado Park, 8:30 a.m. The Oxy men look to defend their SCIAC crown and the women try to solidify themselves as a perennial SCIAC contender.
Non-conference notes: Oxy will run in the UC Riverside Invite on Sept. 15, an annual meet that usually attracts top talent due to the speed of the course. Oxy coach Rob Bartlett’s teams are serious about their preseason meets, but his preferred style is to use early races as “hard practices” with the greater goal of being absolutely prepared for SCIAC and regional meets, in mind.
2011 Record: 5-4, 3-3 SCIAC — Third Place
First SCIAC Competition: Sept. 29 at Redlands, 7 p.m.
Don’t Miss: Pomona-Pitzer at Occidental College on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. The main event of homecoming weekend and the longest standing college football rivalry in Los Angeles. The Tigers and the Sagehens meet for the 114th time, 117 years after they first squared off in 1895. Since 1941, the teams have played for the same coveted drum, awarded to the winner of the contest each year. Oxy’s looking to keep the, “Drum” in Eagle Rock for a ninth consecutive season.
Non-conference notes: The Tigers open the season with Northwest Conference foe Pacific (Ore.) on Sept. 8 and then play a final tune-up in Northern California against Menlo.
2011 Record: 5-13, 5-9 SCIAC
First SCIAC Competition: Sept. 10 at Redlands, 7 p.m.
Don’t Miss: Oxy takes on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sept. 15 at Jack Kemp Stadium at 7 p.m. in the one of four games the Tigers play on Patterson Field in 2012.
Non-conference notes: There isn’t much time for Oxy to prepare for its SCIAC opponents. The Tigers host Whitman College on Sept. 7 just three days before opening the league schedule at Redlands.
2011 Record: 5-10, 5-7 SCIAC
First SCIAC Competition: Sept. 12 vs. Redlands, 4 p.m. at Lower Field.
Don’t Miss: Oxy hosts the defending SCIAC Champion Cal Lutheran Regals on Sept. 22 at Jack Kemp Stadium at 7 p.m. Oxy nearly spoiled Cal Lu’s undefeated season in last year’s season finale at Jack Kemp, but a late equalizer and an overtime goal beat the Tigers 2-1.
Non-conference notes: The Tigers have just a pair of non-conference matches against The Master’s College and Soka, both on the road, to open the season in early September.
2011 Record: 22-9, 11-3 SCIAC – 2011 SCIAC Postseason Tournament Champions
First SCIAC Competition: Sept. 14 at Chapman University, 7:30 p.m.
Don’t Miss: Cal Lutheran at Occidental on Sept. 22. The Regals and the Tigers have asserted themselves as the top two teams in the SCIAC over the last two years and their first meeting of the season will not only be Oxy’s home opener, but a rematch of the SCIAC Tournament Championship game.
Non-conference Notes: The Tigers begin their season in the Northwest playing four games in the Portland area against George Fox, Pacific, Willamette and Linfield. The weekend trip, that includes a doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday, is an opportunity for the Tigers to pick up important wins against regional opponents that could have NCAA Division III postseason at-large bid implications come tournament time. When they return home, Oxy plays another four-game set in the Cal Lu Tournament before starting SCIAC play with a three-game road trip.
Men’s Water Polo
2011 Record: 9-24, 3-7 SCIAC
First SCIAC Competition: Oct. 3 vs. Cal Lutheran at Taylor Pool at 4 p.m.
Don’t Miss: Oxy hosting Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m. on Oct. 13. The only SCIAC matchup scheduled between the two rivals promises to be an interesting contest at Taylor Pool
Non-conference notes: The Tigers play in several showcases and tournament before beginning league play in October. Many of the opponents are still to be determined, but Oxy will play several NCAA Division I teams, including UC Irvine, Long Beach St. and UC Davis.
