Goss, Gray Lead Tigers Past Loggers in Cal Classic Finale

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 16, 2008) – Occidental College plated eight first inning runs en route to a 14-6 pounding of the University of Puget Sound Loggers in the finale of the California Classic Baseball Tournament.
Every batter in the starting lineup reached base in the first inning (as the visiting team) with seven different players scoring. Seth Goss led off the game with a homerun and connected for his second hit of the inning, an RBI, single before scoring for the second time in the inning. He added another solo jack to spark a four-run seventh inning, finishing 3-4 with a walk and stolen base.
The Loggers added two runs in the first inning after following up back-to-back walks with back-to-back hits. The teams each scored in the second and third with the Loggers adding a run in each the fifth and eighth.
Oxy used the seventh inning to pad their lead with four runs on three hits and four walks.
In his first start of the season Spencer Woolwine was tagged for four runs in 2.0 innings of work before handing the ball off to Noel Banuelos.
Oxy pitchers combined to strike out 11 batters. Banuelos tossed 5.2 innings to earn his first win of the season. He scattered seven hits, allowing one run, unearned, while striking out five. John Clair recorded his only out of the game on a called third strike to end the eighth. Kieran Doherty struck out the side in the ninth for the Tigers.
The Tiger bats forced the UPS starter out of the game without recording an out and forced the Loggers to use six different pitchers.
Left fielder Glenn Gray turned in a 3-5 day with a walk, driving in two and scoring two. Adam Franks, Patrick Sarkissian, Matt Andersen, Geoff Ball, Richie Veihl and Jason Jebbia finished with a pair of hits apiece. Pinch hitting in the ninth inning, Dale Garrett and Will Ireton connected for a double and a single, respectively.
