Jason Hawkins

Head Baseball Coach

Jason Hawkins enters his first collegiate head coaching position with more than 14 years of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels.

The Oregon native and son of a long-time high school coach, played for Western Oregon University after a high school career at West Albany HS. Hawkins began his coaching career while still in college, becoming the head coach at Springfield HS in Springfield, OR after graduating in 1995. He went on to obtain his master’s in Education from Pacific University in 1998 while coaching high school ball in North Eugene and Hillsboro.

In 1999 Hawkins took a position as head coach and English teacher at Desert Hot Springs High School near Palm Springs, CA. Over the last eight years he has also served as the Department Chair and ELL Curriculum Coach in the Palm Spring Unified School District. He was the head coach at Desert Hot Springs HS for five seasons before joining the collegiate coaching scene as an infield and hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Redlands.

During his four years at Redlands, Hawkins helped coach the nationally ranked NCAA Division III Bulldogs to a 2006 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, the program’s first in 15 years. During the past four years, the team posted a 104-57 record, tops in SCIAC.

Over the summers Jason has had opportunities to coach in a pair of summer collegiate baseball leagues. For two season he was an infield and bench coach for the Palm Springs Power of the Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association. While he was coaching the Power, Palm Springs finished 11th at the 2006 NBC World Series and captured a SCCBA championship in 2007.This past summer he returned to his hometown of Corvallis, OR, as the pitching coach for the Knights of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League, where current Tiger outfielder Glenn Gray spent his summer playing ball.

Jason and his wife of 11 years, Angela, have two young sons, Will (2) and Cal (1).

 

James Rise

Education:  Earned a BA in Health and Physical Education from Western Oregon University in 2005.  Rise then went on to Pacific University to earn an MAT in Education.

Background:  Born and raised in Springfield, Oregon Rise attended Springfield High School where he competed in baseball, basketball, and football. After graduating high school he played and coached for the College of the Siskiyous before earning his degrees.  Prior to moving to Occidental, Rise served as a Physical Education instructor at Oak Hill School in Eugene, Oregon. Currently he resides in Covina, Ca.

Luke Wetmore

Education:  Earned a BA in Studio Art from the University of Redlands in 2008.

Background:  Born in Santa Rosa, CA, Luke grew up in Santa Cruz where he played baseball at Santa Cruz HS. In 2002 his high school won the SCCAL championship. During his collegiate career he was a member of the UR SCIAC Championship team in 2006.

Coaching Experience:
Luke enters his first year of coaching after playing outfield for the Bulldogs for four years.

Steve Jones

Director of Baseball Operations

Steve Jones has been named the Director of Baseball operations after serving as an Assistant Coach for Oxy in 2008. He is responsible overseeing special projects relating to baseball operations and renovations to Anderson Field and Spencer Field House.


Steve has coached both baseball and fast pitch softball for the past 15 years. For three years he was the Head Coach for the USC Women’s Fast Pitch Club Softball team and won a National Championship in 2003. While at La Salle High School, he was the Head Coach for the Varsity Baseball Winter League 2003-2005, Assistant Coach for the Freshman Baseball team and Assistant Coach for the Varsity Baseball Winter League in 2002.


Steve graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting. He currently holds both a general and a glass and glazing contractor’s license. Additionally, he played Varsity golf for two years while attending PCC.


Other interests include golfing, snow and water skiing and boating.


Steve resides in Duarte with his wife Joanne. They have a daughter Alison and son Matthew.
