Rain Puts Damper on Alumni Baseball Game, but Two Individuals and One Team Enter the Hall of Fame

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2009) – Two days of heavy rain forced the 2009 Occidental College Alumni Baseball game to be cancelled on the Fourth Annual Hall of Fame Awards weekend, but the Hall of Fame Inductions went on as planned with a pair of athletes and one team being honored at a dinner held in the Johnson Student center.

On the 26th Anniversary of the prestigious Baseball Hall of Fame Gil McFadden and Jeff Saegner as well as the 1952 team, led by Bill Anderson, were inducted.

McFadden played second base for Oxy where he accumulated a career .400 batting average. His senior season of 1954 McFadden led the league in hitting with a .431 average, which earned him First Team All-SCIAC honors.

Saegner completed his baseball career in 1988 with a career .409 batting average while he manned first base. As a freshman he led the SCIAC by batting .462, earning All-SCIAC, All-West Region and All-American status in 1985.

Finally, the 1952 team was inducted into the Hall of Fame as the fourth team recognized. The Tigers notched a 10-0 SCIAC record en route to a Championship as they finished with an .833 winning percentage. Overall they boasted a 15-3 record under the leadership of Bill Anderson, whose 1954 team also appears in the Hall.

Occidental will open the 2009 season on Friday as they host the Golden Eagles from La Sierra University at 2:30 p.m. on Anderson Field.
