Bombers Get the Best of Tigers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 10, 2009) – A lack of Tigers offense spoiled a strong 7.0 inning start for sophomore Brooks Belter, as the Ithaca College Bombers shutout Occidental College 4-0 on Anderson Field today in non-conference action.
Belter was solid on the hill, tossing seven strong, striking out three and allowing no earned runs. He forced nine ground balls and got seven fly ball outs. Belter (3-1) left trailing 1-0, after Ithaca scored an unearned run in the fifth inning, but the Bombers quickly strung together four hits in the eighth against Kieran Doherty to add some insurance to their lead. Doherty struck out four batters in two innings of relief.
Oxy’s bats were quiet with Glenn Gray and Jason Jebbia combining for the only four Tiger hits of the game, connecting for two singles apiece. Richie Veihl reached base in all four of his plate appearances, being hit twice and walking twice. He stole a base, but twice was tagged out in rundowns between third and home. Jebbia also stole a base.
Defensively Dale Garrett threw out a would be base stealer to end the sixth inning. Steve Schaffer had two put outs and an assist in center, throwing out an Ithaca runner out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple in the first inning.
Ithaca (2-1) got a complete game from Aaron Sapp who walked three and hit four batters, but struck out no Tigers.
Occidental (9-10) will be back on the field Thursday at 2:30 p.m. when they play host to Menlo College for a single game on Anderson Field.
