No. 17 Oxy Baseball Routs Pomona-Pitzer in Game 2

CLAREMONT — Just because the Occidental baseball team has won tons of close games this season, doesn't mean they can't win it big.

After successfully pulling off its ninth comeback win of the season and sixth by just one run on Friday, the Tigers made sure there was no doubt in Game 2 of their Pomona-Pitzer series on Saturday, crushing the Sagehens 19-5 in eight innings.

Season Impact: The first-place Tigers improve to 19-5 overall and 14-3 in SCIAC play. Oxy has won 17 of its last 18 games, has an in-region record of 19-4 and is No. 17 in the nation.

Devon DeRaad, who set Oxy's single season home run record in 2015 with 13 jacks, hit his seventh of the season overall and SCIAC-best sixth on conference competition. The junior from Scottsdale, Ariz. finished the game 3 for 6 with a pair of runs scored, a double and five RBIs.

Will Martel, Oxy's stud first year lefty, had another excellent outing, going seven innings with just three runs given up, improving to 6-0 on the season.

The Tigers were up 6-4 when they broke the game open with five runs in the sixth and then eight more in the eighth to induce the mercy rule.

Oxy first year catcher Jared Baur went 3 for 5 with five RBIs, Bryan Smith was 2 for 4 with two runs and four RBIs, and Jack Brancheau went 2 for 4 with two runs.
