Tigers Beat Willamette to Close Weekend

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental baseball team played three non-conference games over the weekend. Oxy faced Ithaca on Friday and Willamette in a doubleheader on Saturday.

Game 1: Ithaca 6, Occidental 3 - 11 Innings

The Tigers and the Bombers needed 11 innings to get a result. Ithaca went up 3-2 with a three-run top of the seventh, Oxy evened the game in the bottom of the ninth and then Ithaca rallied for three in the 11th.

Eamon McNeil went 2 or 5 with a solo home run and two runs scored, Jack Brancheau was 2 for 5 and Devon DeRaad went 2 for 6 with an RBI for the Tigers. Michael Netzel and Jeff Oki each went 1 for 3.

Oxy starter Nolan Watson had a solid outing, striking out seven batters in 6.2 innings, with three runs charged against him.

Oxy reliever Dean Abramson pitched 2.1 innings scoreless, putting him at 10.1 innings on the season without an earned run.

Game 2: Willamette 11, Occidental 6

Oxy's normally reliable bullpen gave up nine runs as a close game got away from the Tigers late.

Willamette scored two runs in the seventh, three in the eighth and four in the ninth, breaking open what was a 3-2 Oxy lead going into the seventh.

Jack Brancheau had a big game at the plate, going 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs for Oxy.. Jamie Cooper hit a solo home run and Bryan Smith had an RBI-double.

Game 3:  Occidental 5, Willamette 4 - 7 innings

Derek Sun drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh and then Jamie Cooper came away with an RBI single for the win.

The game was called for time with no new inning scheduled for after 5:30 p.m.

Cade Denyer pitched all seven innings, giving up three earned runs in the winning effort.

Liam Fischer went 2 for 3 for the Tigers and Bryan Smith was 2 for 3 with an RBI-double and a run scored. Michael Netzel, Jeff Oki, Graham Pimm and Eamon McNeil all went 1 for 3.

Season Impact: The Tigers record goes to 14-7 on the season.

Next Game: Oxy returns to SCIAC play on Friday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 3 p.m. at Anderson Field.
