REDLANDS — The Occidental baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader at Redlands.
The Bulldogs took Game 1 and Oxy came back for a victory in Game 2.
Bryan Smith had a big day at the plate for the Tigers, going 4 for 8 with a home run, two doubles, three runs batted in and two runs scored.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall into a tie for second in the SCIAC standings at 12-6 and move to 21-12 overall.
Game 1: Redlands 3, Occidental 2
Nolan McCarthy got the start and gave Oxy a solid effort, throwing seven innings with just three earned runs charged against him.
After Oxy evened the score at 1-1 on a Jack Brancheau sacrifice fly that brought in Jared Baur in the top of the sixth inning, Redlands countered with two runs in the bottom half on an Aaron Singh single.
Oxy did make things interesting in the ninth when Michael Netzel doubled in Smith, cutting the scored to 3-2.
Smith went 2 for 4 with a run scored, Eamon McNeil was 2 for 4 with a double, Liam Fisher went 1 for 2 and Baur was 1 for 3 with a triple and a run scored.
Game 2: Occidental 8, Redlands 4
Smith had a big game, blasting a three-run homer in the first as Oxy posted four runs in the inning on its way to a wire-to-wire win.
Five different Oxy players joined Smith with at least two hits. Brancheau went 2 for 5 with a pair of runs scored and a double, Reid Gibbs was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, Michael Netzel went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and Fisher was 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.
The closest Redlands got was 4-2 in the second.
