Chapman Takes Game 1 in Pivotal Series

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental baseball team dropped its series opener with Chapman, 10-4 at Anderson Field on Friday.

The Tigers need to sweep the doubleheader between the teams at Chapman on Saturday to clinch a a spot in the four-team SCIAC Postseason Tournament that determines the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 22-15 overall and 13-9 in SCIAC play.

The Tigers are in fifth place, one game back of fourth.

Chapman improves to 23-12 and 14-8.

Oxy took advantage of some free passes and an error to score all four of its run in the bottom of the first inning.

Chapman rallied for three in the fourth, and two more in the fifth, going up 7-4. The Panthers put the game out of reach with a three-run home run in the ninth.

Oxy starter and ace Nolan Watson pitched 8.2 innings, saving Oxy's arms for Saturday.

Riley James threw the final out for Oxy.

Joey Harmon earned the win for the Panthers.

The Tigers managed just four hits and couldn't get much going on offense outside of the first inning.

Senior Day: The Tigers honored seniors Jamie Cooper, Graham Pimm, Walker Marks, Will Nahmens, Devon DeRaad, Nolan Watson and Riley James with a brief pregame ceremony.

Next Game: The Tigers and Panthers beging their doubleheader at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
