LOS ANGELES — The Occidental football team will play Redlands on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Jack Kemp Stadium in the team's first home game of the season.
The Tigers canceled what would have been their season opener against Pacific (Ore.) on Sept. 16 after a rash of injuries cut the team's already thin roster to troublesome numbers. Oxy has bounced back and is ready to compete again.
"Our numbers are relatively small, but our competitive spirit is great," said Oxy head football coach Rob Cushman, who's in his first year with the Tigers. "We're excited to take the field in front of our home fans for the first time this season and show everyone what we're all about."
Along with the team's home opener, it's Oxy's first SCIAC game of the season against the defending SCIAC champions.
Oxy is led by standout wide receivers Ian Bonde and Carlton O'Neal. Bonde led Oxy with 6 catches for 79 yards in the team's season opener at Puget Sound on Sept. 9 and O'Neal had five catches for 34 yards and a touchdown.
The Tigers are led on defense by linebacker Chris Garcia who had a team-best 11 tackles against UPS.
