Oxy Alumni Named to LAUSD Athletic Hall of Fame

Three standout Occidental athletes have been named to the inaugural class of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Athletic Hall of Fame: Pat Henry Yeomans ’38 in tennis, Sammy Lee ’43 in diving, and Jack Kemp ’57 in football.

All-American Boys: Groh, Wertheimer recognized at highest level
SALEM, Va. (Dec. 19, 2009) – As the 2009 Division III football season culminated with the annual Stagg Bowl in Salem, Va. between the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater and Mount Union College, the d3football.com staff announced the All American Teams at a banquet following the game, which UWW won 38-28. Two Tigers earned the highest honor given to collegiate athletes as both Alex Groh and Alex Wertheimer earned All-American status.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Dec. 14, 2009) – Announced late last week by d3football.com, both Alex Wertheimer and Alex Groh were voted to the First Team All-West Region following the 2009 football season and will now be candidates for All-American status, to be announced Dec. 19 in conglomeration with the Stagg Bowl.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 18, 2009) – Following the fall season of 2009 a number of Occidental College athletes were recognized by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after being earning All-SCIAC honors.

Tigers keep “The Shoes” in season finale win at Whittier
WHITTIER, Calif. (Nov. 14, 2009) – In a game that saw players shine on both sides of the ball, Occidental College players, including 21 seniors, left everything on the field with a 44-23 victory over Whittier College in the season and Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finale. With the win the Tigers also retain possession of the coveted “Shoes”, tying the all-time series 33-33.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2009) – Last weekend Occidental College brought “The Drum” home to Eagle Rock with a 44-30 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. This weekend, in the final of the season, the Tigers hope to duplicate the effort as they take the field on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1:00 p.m. to play Whittier College in the “Battle for the Shoes” in the second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivalry game in as many weeks.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 11, 2009) – Junior linebacker Zac Perkins was named to the week 10 d3football.com Team of the Week following a stand-out performance as the Tigers erased a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Pomona-Pitzer 44-30 last Saturday afternoon on the road.

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2009) – Hitting the road for the first time in over a month, the Occidental College Tigers had more on the line than returning to their winning ways after a 24-14 loss a week ago. Today at Pomona-Pitzer, the Tigers made big plays at the right times to power past the Sagehens and bring The Drum back to Eagle Rock where it has called home for the last five years.

This weekend the Tigers travel to Pomona-Pitzer, where they not only look to rebound from a loss to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Cal Lutheran, but the boys from Eagle Rock will play to retain possession of “The Drum,” in the first of two rivalry games this season.

Halloween haunting sees Kingsmen top Tigers
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2009) – Before tonight, the Tigers had only lost on their home field twice over the last five year span. Tonight the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen made it three times, claiming victories in their last two visits to Eagle Rock, running their way past No. 21 Occidental College with a 24-14 win. Entering the evening the teams were tied atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings, but the Kingsmen now control the top spot alone.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 30, 2009) – Last year it all came down to a last second field goal, and the Tigers walked away from Cal Lutheran University with a victory, ultimately clinching their fourth Southern California Intercollegiate Conference title in five years. This week will be no different as the teams both enter the weekend with 3-0 league records and have high hopes with their sights set on claiming the 2009 crown and earning an automatic bid to the Playoffs.
