Golfers Continue to Improve at SCIAC #3


RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (March 16, 2009) – In a conference that is shaping up to be one of the best across Division III in the country, the Occidental College Tigers continue to battle with the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference golf teams, three of whom are nationally ranked.

Today golfers teed off at Emipre Lakes Country Club, the home of numerous PGA qualifying tournaments and Nationwide events. Occidental finished with a combined 302, which was fourth at the event. No. 9 ranked La Verne earned top honors behind a 66 shot performance by Rizal Amin who tied with Tain Lee who also shot a 66 for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who tied for second with the University of Redlands.

The low scorer for the Tigers today was freshman Sam Weiss who shot an even par 73. Ryan Ferguson shot a SCIAC personal best 76 and freshman Andrew Larkin also posted a 76 to tie for second on the Tigers. Both junior captain Richard Highsmith and freshman Miles Cole shot 77’s while Jamey Stambler rounded out the field with an 84.

Both Weiss and Highsmith shot a 36 on the back nine for the black and orange.

Overall this season Oxy improves to fifth with 11 points, although the difference between second and fifth was just four points.

 

The Tigers will be back on the links on Monday, March 30 when they travel to Tustin Ranch to play Chapman beginning at noon.
