Golfers Finish Sub-300 at SCIAC #4

LA VERNE, Calif. (April 14, 2009) – The progress continues. On a cool day with winds gusting up to 18 miles per hour, the Occidental College golf team made some history, shooting under 300 as a team for the first time in recent memory.

In addition to finishing with 297 total strokes as a team, Oxy had two players shoot under par, which has not happened for years, if ever. The freshman duo of Andrew Larkin and Sam Weiss each shot a 70, which was one under par, to lead the Tiger pack.

Currently Occidental has defeated each SCIAC school at least once with the exception of the Division III No. 2 ranked Leopards from La Verne. Also ranked are Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and the University of Redlands, who the Tigers trail by four and three points, respectively. Oxy sits in fourth place.

Today ULV won the tournament with an astonishing 279, five strokes under par, while CMS posted a 293.

There were six total golfers who shot sub-par rounds, one coming from an individual player, including Oxy’s freshman pair who shared a fifth place finish overall. The third lowest score of the afternoon for Occidental came from Miles Cole who shot a 38 on the front nine, finishing with a 40 on the back nine to shoot a 78 overall. Rounding out the scoring for the Tigers was Ryan Ferguson who shot a 79.

Senior captain, Richard Highsmith, who is generally an extremely consistent player had an off day, finishing with an 81, tied with teammate Jamey Stambler to round out the Tiger players.

Occidental will be back out on the course on Sunday, April 19 when they face off with Chapman University in a non-conference match at Goose Creek Country Club. The Tigers return to league play on April 23 with the SCIAC #5 at Redlands Country Club.
