OAK VALLEY — The Occidental men's golf team had the best day of any squad at the SCIAC Championships on Monday, shooting a combined 292.
With 36 holes in the books and 18 left on Tuesday, the Tigers sit in third, trailing first-place Cal Lutheran by two strokes.
Colton Bares led the way for Oxy, shooting the second-best round of any player so far at the tournament with a 4-under 68. Current individual leader John McCord of Redlands shot a 65 in his opening round.
Oxy's Dylan Jirsa is currently fourth overall at 145 (72/73), Bares is in sixth at 147 (79/68) and Cameron Connor is tied for seventh at 148 (72/76). Will Mansfield is Oxy's fourth best and in 19th at 153 (78/75) and Sam Miller is fifth and 27th at 158 (78/80).
Oxy has some stiff competition in the SCIAC. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is ranked No. 2 in the GCAA Poll, Cal Lutheran is No. 11 and Redlands is No. 17.
"We've shown that we can compete with anyone in our conference, which really means anyone in the nation, at various times throughout the year," Oxy head coach Will Morris said. "Today was more evidence of that and I couldn't be happier for our guys. Now our challenge is to finish the tournament strong for another 18 holes."
