CHINO HILLS — The Occidental men's golf team had a big opening weekend, finishing fourth at SCIAC # 1 at Los Serranos Country Club over the weekend.
Led by senior co-captain Sam Miller who finished tied for 10th overall at 3-over par 147. He shot an opening-day round of 76 and then dropped five strokes for an impressive 1-under 71 on Sunday.
"Sam is a great senior leader and returning All-SCIAC selection," Oxy head coach Will Morris said. "We think he's going to have a great senior year and is as good of a player as there is in the nation at our level."
Gus Grunau, a first year from St. Paul, Minn., had Oxy's second-best score at 4-over 148 with rounds of 78 and 70 for a 12th place finish.
"We are looking forward to an outstanding Tiger career for Gus, who has been performing well already," Morris said. "His 70 is about as good of a score as I've even seen from a first year player."
The fourth-place finish is particularly impressive given the national prowess of SCIAC goalf. The three teams that finished ahead of Oxy are in the top 8 in the country.
"I'm really proud of the team as we didn't play very well on Saturday and came back with an outstanding score on Sunday," Morris said. "It shows resiliency and mental toughness to bounce back and perform better."
Next Round: The Tigers are back in action with a dual match against Menlo College on March 14 at Lake Merced Golf Club.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
