Four players hit double figures as Oxy cruises past Emerson in final tune-up for league play

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 4, 2010) – As the Occidental College men’s basketball team kicked off the 2010 portion of their schedule, Huston Conti led all players with 22 points, guiding the Tigers to an 83-65 victory over Emerson College (MA) to stretch their win streak to three games.

Conti started things off and Oxy used that opening spark to open up an 18-7 lead in the first seven minutes and although the Lions would claw back within five points, at 18-13, the Tigers held a 13-point advantage at the break. Oxy again shot an incredible 62% from the field in the opening stanza as Conti was 5-for-7 from the field , knocking down four three-pointers for 16 first-half points.

In the final period of play, the Tigers built a 23-point lead as they never trailed in the contest. After the intermission, Oxy scored 18 points in the paint, limiting Emerson to just 10 while putting on a defensive showing with 26 rebounds, nine offensive, after just one offensive rebound in the first half. Occidental converted those second chances into eight points.

Overall Oxy out-rebounded Emerson 42-29 and Jake Copithorne finished with a game-high four offensive boards as he pulled down nine total rebounds. Sean Anderson led all players with 12 boards and added a pair of blocks, while Copithorne was credited with one.

Also reaching double figures today for the Tigers were Jack Hanley and Deshun McCoy with 17 and 16 points respectively while Anderson rounded out the four-some with 13. To go along with his 22 points, Conti led all players with six assists and three steals.

Emerson was consistent tonight, going 12-for-32 in both halves to finish shooting 37.5 % from the field overall. They were solid at the stripe, knocking down 9-for-11 free-throws behind a 4-for-5 performance from Jeremy Shannon, who led the Lions with 20 total points, adding four assists. Nathan Firn was 6-for-6 and a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc to tally 18 points before fouling out in the second half. Bryan Rouse chipped in with 10 points.

Tonight marked the final non-conference game of the season for Occidental (8-3) as they open up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. against the Whittier College Poets, following the women’s SCIAC home-opener at 5:00 p.m.
