LOS ANGELES — Austin DeWitz was an absolute stud as the Occidental men's basketball team overcame a bumpy performance to beat Cal Miramar 76-66 at Rush Gymnasium on Friday.
DeWitz, a 6-foot-7 junior from Oregon, scored 20 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, had seven assists, four steals and three blocks. He was all over the court on offense and defense, coming up with nearly every crucial play for the Tigers. He made 6 of his 7 foul shots as the game got tight, boxed out to force an over the back call, and came up with crucial steals and rebounds as Cal Miramar tried to pass the ball over the top inside.
Ryan Kaneshiro had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. He had an uncharacteristic five turnovers, but was strong with the ball at the end of the game.
Jonny Crosthwaite was rock solid off the bench in extended minutes. The 6-foot-5 sophomore forward scored eight points, had eight rebounds, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes played.
Ryan Herrera led four Falcons in double figures with 15 points. Kenyon Williams had 11, and Steven Adams and Tommy Le'Gardye had 10.
The Tigers struggles came mostly from over-dribbling and not being strong with the ball when the Falcons' help rotated over.
Oxy also had a rough night at the line, shooting just 20 for 33 including missing the front ends of a few 1-and-1s.
Season Impact: Oxy wins its fifth game in a row, improving to 5-0 on the season.
Next Game: The Tigers open SCIAC play against Cal Lutheran at Rush Gymnasium on Wednesday. The Kingsmen made it to the SCIAC Championship game last season and are among the favorites to be in the mix again this season.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
