LOS ANGELES — Zach Baines scored a game-high 24 points, including some crucial baskets down the stretch and the go-ahead field goal, as the Occidental men's basketball team erased a double-digit second half lead to beat Cal Lutheran 67-63 in overtime at Rush Gymansium on Wednesday.
Baines hit a 17-foot jump shot with 1:07 remaining in overtime and Oxy was able to win the game on defense.
Oxy improves to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in SCIAC play.
Cal Lutheran falls to 2-3 and 0-1 in SCIAC.
Jonny Crosthwaite had a huge game for the Tigers, scoring 11 points, with 11 rebounds and six assists in 42 minutes. He came up with important loose balls and made two free throws at the end of the overtime period to ice the game after being fouled when he secured the rebound.
Austin DeWitz played big in the second half, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds before he fouled out with 3 mintues to go in overtime.
Oxy trailed 46-31 with 13:48 remaining in the game before ending regulation on a 28-13 run. The Tigers held the Kingsmen to just 23 percent shooting in the second half and 32 percent from the game.
The Tigers finally got all the way back to even when Jeevin Sandhu and Baines hit back-to-back 3-pointers, tying the game at 57. DeWitz had a key 15-footer to tie the score at 59 two possessions later.
Oxy ramped up its defense even more in the overtime period, allowing no field goals. The only four points they gave up were free throws.
The Tigers took care of the ball well, turning it over just 11 times with 16 assists.
Kyle Ferreria led Cal Lu with 20 points, Austin Cole had 16 and Blake Miles had 10.
