Tigers Beat Westmont in Exhibition

LOS ANGELESAustin DeWitz led four players in double figures as the Occidental men's basketball team beat NAIA scholarship school Westmont 89-79 in an exhibition game at Rush Gym on Saturday.

DeWitz was the best all-around player on the court. He scored 24 points on 11 for 17 shooting, guarded Westmont's 6-foot-8 post player, dished out six assists, grabbed seven rebounds and had four steals in 38 minutes played. He also got his hands on balls at the offensive and defensive end of the court, keeping rebounds alive that the Tigers eventually controlled. 

Zach Baines scored an efficient 16 points on 6 for 10 shooting, including 2 for 3 from beyond the 3-point line for the Tigers. He got hot in the second half, scoring 14 points as Oxy opened up double-digit leads as big as 16 points down the stretch. 

With 6:49 to play in the game and Oxy leading 69-61, the Tigers went on a 10-2 run. 

Caleb Yellin-Flaherty overcame foul trouble in the first half, scoring 12 of his 15 points in the second. He had five key defensive rebounds, went 5 for 6 from the field and 3 for 4 from the 3-point line, and was solid all-around on offense and defense. 

Ryan Kaneshiro was outstanding distributing the ball with 11 assists and six rebounds, Jacob Adler had 20 points off the bench on 7 for 12 shooting and 4 for 8 from the 3-point line, Jonny Crosthwaite added eight points and Tyler Sweeney scored four points off the bench.

The Tigers shot 55 percent from the field and 52 percent from the 3-point line, sharing the ball and finding the open man.

Oxy hit a rough patch in the second half when it turned the ball over and gave Westmont easy baskets, but was able to fight off the runs and maintain its grip on the victory.

Olisa Nwachi led Westmont with 21 points, Maxwell Hudgins added 19, Matthew Ramon had 16 and Kyle Scalmanini had 10 off the bench. 

Oxy's defense forced 17 turnovers and had 12 steals, allowing the Tigers to get out in transition.
