LOS ANGELES — Ryan Kaneshiro was named SCIAC Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
It is the second week in a row that Oxy has won the weekly honor. Austin DeWitz earned the distinction last week.
Kaneshiro, a 6-foot-2 junior point guard from Santa Clarita, had a big week in a pair of blowout wins over West Coast Baptist and Rhodes. His best performance came against Rhodes when he nearly had a triple-double with eight points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Against West Coast Baptist he had eight assists and no turnovers.
Kaneshiro has become known for his decision making, on-ball defense and outstanding rebounding as a guard. In three games he's averaging eight rebounds and seven assists per game. He also has a remarkable 22 assists and one turnover this year.
"Over the course of a game Ryan makes a lot of winning plays and most of them don't show up on the stat sheet," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "Whether it's the hockey assist, the right defensive rotation or frustrating a player on the other team, he's always competing. We're happy that he's been given this much-deserved recognition."
The Tigers are 3-0 and return to action against Cal Miramar on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
