Hat Trick for Waters Leads to Tigers Win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2007) – Using his head and his foot junior midfielder Ben Waters scored three times against Whittier College en route to a 4-1 victory on the Lower Soccer Field at Occidental College today.

Waters put the Tigers on the board in the 18th minute. The Poets offense knotted the game at 1-1 with a score by DJ Covarrubias five minutes later.

Just before the half Oxy senior John Minger found the back of the net with the second and ultimate winning goal with 12 seconds to go in the first half.

Occidental controlled the ball for the majority of the game taking 24 total shots to the five Whittier attempts. Oxy had four corner kicks. The final one flew off the foot of David Rosenberg and found the head of Waters who sent the ball into the net for the fourth goal of the contest in the 87th minute. Waters had scored nine minutes earlier on another Rosenberg shot that hit the post and ricocheted back into the field of play. Waters softly kicked the ball past the Poets goalie.

Tigers goalie Alex Combs recorded four saves while Poets keeper Paul Stepler-Camp tallied five.

With the win the Tigers improve to 4-6 overall, 3-4 in SCIAC play. The loss drops the Poets to 1-8-1, 1-5-1.

Oxy will host the University of La Verne Leopards at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6 on the Lower Soccer Field.
