Tigers and Fords End in Tie
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 12, 2008) – On Sunday afternoon the Tigers played their final non-conference game of the season when Occidental College hosted Haverford College (PA) on Patterson Field. Neither the allotted 90 minute nor an overtime period was enough time to determine a winner as the teams tied at 3-3.
Oxy jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Gilberto Ortega scored an unassisted goal, his second in three games, in the seventh minute of action.
Senior Fran Taylor scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year in the 31st minute to put the Tigers up 2-0.
Haverford bounced back with an unassisted score from Tyler Freeman four minutes later, cutting the Tigers’ lead to 2-1. Just before the half, in the 44th minute, the Fords knotted things up at 2-2.
For the first time in his collegiate career Ryan Trujillo found the back of the net, to give Oxy a 3-2 advantage.
The Fords were not done yet, though as they tied the game up again in the final minute of play when Freeman scored his second goal of the game.
Occidental held the advantage in both shots taken (30-20) and corner kicks (12-5) while the Fords’ goalie Adam Care recorded 13 saves to Oxy’s combined eight. Alex Combs did the majority of the work in front of the cage with six saves (three goals allowed) in just over 89 minutes while Andrew Larkin held off the opposition in the overtime sets with two saves and no goals allowed.
During the overtime session neither team was able to score, leaving the final as a tie. Haverford (2-6-3) has played to three draws in 2008 while the Tigers now have a pair of ties at 4-5-2 overall this season.
The Tigers will return to SCIAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 15 when they host the University of La Verne at 4:00 p.m. on the Lower Soccer Field.
