Tigers win first game of season before packed house

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2009) – The bleachers of Patterson Field were filled with students, parents and fans and while the game began scoreless in the opening half, the Tigers gave the crowd something to cheer about as they earned a 4-0 victory tonight against La Sierra University.
Teams exchanged opportunities in the first half with the Golden Eagles taking seven shots and the Tigers firing the ball off towards the net five times. Thanks to the quick hands and instinct of junior goalkeeper Ian Powell, a save (one of two in the opening period) in the 13th minute, the game remained scoreless entering the break.
For the first time in the states, junior exchange student, Rob Tuttlebee wasted no time letting everyone know who he was. Early in the second half, he found his way through traffic to score the first and ultimate winning goal of the game in unassisted fashion.
In the 79th minute Tuttblebee then found an open Gil Ortega who scored the second goal of the game. With just under two minutes remaining in regulation Deryk Lim scored the first of two unassisted goals to round out the scoring. The second came with just eight seconds to play in the game after a shot on goal ricocheted off the cross bar right to an open, and undefended, Lim who tapped the ball into the goal.
Powell, celebrated his birthday in fine fashion, with four saves as Oxy notched its first victory of the season.
A couple of tough games to open the 2009 campaign did not discourage the Tigers, whose head coach DJ Waddington reiterated that if the Tigers kept playing hard the wins would come.
“We came into the season knowing what we had to do to win,” junior captain CJ Grigoriadis went on, “Tonight we came out and executed and got our first win of the season. We feel prepared to take on La Verne in our first SCIAC game next Wednesday.”
Occidental will host the ULV Leopards on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 4:00 p.m. on the Lower Soccer field to open up their conference schedule.
