LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental College men's soccer players Reid Sakamoto (Honolulu, HI), Marcus Brandford (Seattle, WA) and Ben Murray (Sandpoint, ID) were named Second Team All-SCIAC on Wednesday.
Brandford, a sophomore midfielder, and Murray, a junior forward, made the list for the first time in their careers after combining for nine of the Tigers 21 goals, while Sakamoto notches his third All-SCIAC selection in three years.
"It's not really a big deal, it doesn't mean anything, but it's still nice a to get recognition from the coaches in the league," Murray said. "It's nice that they notice you and notice how well you were playing."
All three players earning the distinction, represent a different part of the Tigers lineup.
Murray led Oxy in points with 15 on six goals and three assists as the Tigers primary striker, Brandford scored three goals as an attacking midfielder and Sakamoto was the team's defensive leader and a team captain.
All three players will be returning next season to a Tigers team that graduates just four seniors, a good sign for Oxy after the squad showed signs of youth throughout the season.
"It's good that these guys got recognized for their performance and it's a good sign to have three of our best players returning next year," Occidental College coach Rod Lafaurie said. "Hopefully they will continue to develop, along with the rest of the team, and we will improve on this year's mark."
The University of Redlands' Cody Carlson was named the Player of the Year, his teammate Charles Izydorek won the Newcomer of the Year and Pomona-Pitzer's Danny Nasry won the Brine Award of Distinction.
