LOS ANGELES -- Ariel Rosso had two goals and two assists, and Liam Walsh added a pair of goals and one assist as the Occidental men's soccer team put on an offensive clinic with a 5-3 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Jack Kemp Stadium on Wednesday.
Rosso now leads all SCIAC players with five assists on the season.
The Tigers improve to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in SCIAC play. Oxy moves into a tie for second place with Cal Lutheran, two games back of first-place Redlands.
CMS falls to 2-6 and 2-4.
After the Tigers had several free kick opportunities and corner kicks to open the game, Conal Dennison got Oxy on the board in the 39th minute, finding a loose ball at his feet and putting it away.
Oxy broke the game open at the start of the second half when Rosso stole the ball from the CMS goalie and played it to Walsh in front of an empty net for an easy score to make it 2-0 in the 46th minute.
Rosso's first goal was a beautiful right-footed chip shot from 25 yards out into the top right corner of the net that put Oxy up 3-0 in the 59th minute.
CMS countered with two goals to cut the lead back to 3-2 on shots from Matthew Swift and Aiden Johnson just moments apart.
Oxy went up 4-2 on Rosso's second goal. Walsh flicked a headed off the cross bar on a free kick and Rosso rebounded the miss and gave the Tigers a sigh of relief and two-goal cushion in the 74th minute.
Oxy's prettiest goal of the game was the fifth. Elijah Remy showed off some skill on the ball and then played a ball to Rosso up the right side, Walsh made a near-post run on Rosso's rolling cross and calmly redirected it into the net.
CMS got a late goal that was credited to Swift.
