LOS ANGELES — Liam Walsh scored the game-winner and got the hockey assist on Oxy's first goal as the Occidental men's soccer team defeated Antelope Valley 2-1 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Sunday.
On a free kick in the 55th minute, Walsh hit a rolling shot with his right foot around the Antelope Valley wall and into the goal. The Antelope Valley keeper never saw the shot and never moved. As the ball hit the back of the net, Walsh rushed the sideline to celebrate with his teammates.
The goal was all Oxy needed to hang onto victory after falling behind early in the first half.
Antelope Valley scored first in the 18th minute when Manuel Medina headed in a corner kick from the back post.
Oxy goalkeeper Scott Drazan had one of the plays of the game in the 61st minute saving a breakaway shot from Medina to preserve Oxy's 2-1 lead. Medina found himself with space and time behind the Oxy defense, but Drazan charged out to cut down his angle and easily handled a very important and threatening opportunity.
Matthew Teplitz had a pair of good opportunities to score in the first half, working up the left sideline. His best shot was struck well with his left foot, but sailed high of the goal.
Walsh also had a shot saved in the first half that was dangerous for Antelope Valley.
