Oxy Loses on PK, No. 3 Seed in Playoffs

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's soccer team had opportunities to score and was a moment or two away from clinching a share of its first regular-season SCIAC Championship in program history.

But a foul in the box and a William Birchard penalty kick gave Claremont-Mudd-Scripps its golden goal in the 94th minute for a 1-0 victory at Jack Kemp on Saturday.

If the Tigers would have won, they would have tied CMS for first, making them the first group of Tigers to finish the regular season atop the SCIAC standings. Instead, the season will continue with Oxy as the No. 3 seed in the SCIAC Tournament, traveling to play at No. 2 Redlands on Thursday.

Oxy has faced the Bulldogs on the road in each of its previous two SCIAC Tournament appearances.

Ben Simon was involved in two of Oxy's best chances to score. In the 10th minute he hit a left-footed free kick from 20 yards out that CMS goalkeeper Jacob Mays spoiled with a diving save to his right.

Simon also hit a great ball in that found Adrian Paredes' head, but the shot went just over the cross bar in the 70th minute.

At times Oxy looked in control and at others CMS started to get its footing, particularly later in the game.

Oxy goalkeeper Scott Drazan made a handful of nice plays charging off his line for punch outs and crowded catches that moved Oxy past uneasy moments. Drazan's best save was in the 75th minute when he made a leaping punch out to ruin a shot from Ben Tucker.

SCIAC leading goal-scorer Liam Walsh was involved in an Oxy ball hitting the back of the net, but he was whistled for a foul for taking out the keeper. Walsh leads the SCIAC with an incredible 15 goals and recently broke Oxy's record for single-season goals and career goals.

The Tigers finish the regular season in third place.

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Thursday in the SCIAC Playoffs at Redlands.

CMS will host Chapman in the other semifinal in Claremont.

The highest remaining seed will host the SCIAC Championship game on Nov. 3.
