LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan 25, 2007) - The Occidental women's
swimming & diving team notched a convincing 133-62 victory over
Whittier College Jan. 20 at Slade Aquatics Center in
Whittier. The Occidental men also defeated Whittier
The Tigers won all but three events in the women's competition and all but four on the men's side. Eliza Callwood '09 won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke while Audrey Akcasu '10 cruised to first place in the 50 freestyle. Renae Rykaczewski '09 continued to improve, shaving a second and a half off her season-best in the 100 backstroke.
Eileen McMillan '09 swam a technically perfect 200 freestyle, marking a return to her early-season form. Sara Mendoza '10 placed second in the 200 free and later won the 500 free in 5:47.93.
Kelsey Fuller '10 came from behind to hold off Whittier's Kera Kimura to win the 200 IM and swam the last leg of the women's 200 freestyle relay. Occidental capped the women's competition with a 1- 2 relay finish. Kayla Schott-Bresler '09 and Elizabeth Shdo '08 finished 1- 2 in an All-Occidental 400 IM.
In the men's competition, Dickson Fai '08 easily won the 100 backstroke by six seconds and cruised to first in the 200 IM. Adam Kantor logged a respectable 56.81 in the 100 butterfly and teamed with Fai, Jeff Oakley, and Cameron Carlson on the winning 200 medley relay.
Sophomore Mike Wong swam a solid 400 IM (4:39.22), earning himself a spot in the event at the SCIAC Championships Feb. 15-17. Sean Inoue '09 and Abiel Garcia '09 claimed first in the 200 and 500 freestyles, respectively.
The Tigers will honor six seniors (Oakley, Ian McCurdy, Troy Palme, Nikolai Schweingruber, Derek Steer, Alex Supple) before this weekend's meet with Caltech. The meet is scheduled for a 10:30am start at Taylor Pool.
