Swimmers Battle at Inter-Squad


LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 5, 2008) – There is no better way to ring in the new year than with a little friendly competition among teammates. That is exactly what the Occidental swim program did on Saturday at the Tiger Pentathlon at Taylor Pool.

With the squad divided into two teams, black and orange, bragging rights, and a nice warm meal were on the line. Every swimmer swam every event today. The losing team was subject to cooking breakfast for the superior team following the meet.

The men’s orange team outscored the black team 350-288, while the women’s black team posted a 74-63 victory over the orange team.

Senior Dickson Fai led the way with a trio of victories in the five-event meet. Mike Wong won the 200 IM (2:09.24) and Jeven Dovey took honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.01). Fai won the 100 butterfly (56.45), 100 backstroke (54.00)and 100 freestyle (51.45).

Renae Rykaczewski and Eileen McMillan each finished first for the women in a pair of events, while Kelsey Fuller was the top female finisher in the fifth event. Rykaczewski was the first female to hit the wall in the 100 butterfly (1:05.80) and 100 backstroke (1:07.66). McMillan clocked in first for the women in the 200 IM (2:30.56) and the 100 freestyle (1:00.52).

Occidental will return to competition in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday when the Tigers host Cal Lutheran at 11:00 a.m. at Taylor Pool. Diving will take place on Friday evening at 5:45 p.m. at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center.
