LOS ANGELES — The Occidental College men's swimming and diving team couldn't ride the wave of momentum from its non conference win over Lewis and Clark College earlier in the week into Saturday's SCIAC dual meet.

Coming off one of their best team performances of the season, the Tigers struggled in a 197-81 loss to Whittier College at Taylor Pool.

"They put together a very impressive meet. Obviously with the size of our guys squad we need to be really flexible with what events we go into," Occidental coach Shea Manning said. "This time around it just didn't work out for us. Weren't able to spread out our guys enough to control the amount of depth that Whittier has on their team."

Oxy handled Lewis and Clark 164-96 on Jan. 9 and had eight first place finishes. Against Whittier they were at the other end of the spectrum.

Steven Van Deventer (Naperville, Ill.) had Oxy's only individual win when he beat Whittier's Michael Eachus by almost a second in the 100 yard butterfly.

"I'm really impressed with Steven," Manning said. "He is about as dynamic an athlete as anyone on our team."

The Tigers are back in the pool Jan. 21 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Manning's alma matter.

"The biggest focus is on what's best for us and making sure our experience at CMS is something that's going to complete this idea of a roadmap to the end of our season," Manning said. "We can't get caught up in size of CMS or the fact that they're a top 20 team. We have to remain focused on what we can control and how the experience will help us with our overall season goals."
