When you walk on the campus of Oxy and ask about the Swimming & Diving program, these are the words you will hear from faculty, staff, students, and coaches. Our program works jointly with Occidental College to provide our student-athletes a positive & successful learning experience. Once you become a member of the program, you join a family that trains to achieve excellence at the National level.
Academic Training
Normally, our athletes perform better academically during
the season than they do out of season. Why? We believe
our program teaches student-athletes the intangibles that help them
become successful in the classroom and beyond. Our athletes
are more efficient with their time, able to concentrate longer, and
able to see the long-term benefits of today’s work.
Focused Training
The great debate among coaches and the most common question we
receive is, “Does your program focus on quality or
quantity?” The answer…neither! Focused
Training is our philosophy that every swimmer & diver can be
trained to meet their specific needs in a team environment.
Athletes receive individual goals, specialized technique training,
and individualized sets all within a team practice. As a
result, our team is more confident, better prepared, and able to
compete at their best when it counts most. The following are
five factors each team member (as well as the entire team)
receives:
Psychology: Swimmers are mentally prepared to
swim faster than they ever felt. Divers can visually see
themselves performing the perfect dive from take-off to entry.
Technique: Swimmers train smarter to become
faster. Divers repeat actions over and over to make them a
habit
In-Water Training: Swimmers are trained to swim
fast, not just to get in-shape.
Strength Training & Flexibility: Team members
increase their power & explosiveness through our unique
“dry-land”, “weight-land”,
“wet-land”, and “ab-land” exercises.
Life Skills: Athletes learn to create balance
between swimming, academics, and personal life.
Family
Ask each team member why he or she competes, and one of the main
reasons will be the teammate/friend standing right next to
them. Through both the good and bad times, the Oxy family is
always there to cheer for you, believe in you, support you, and
congratulate you.
