Tigers Settle for Opening Day Split at SCIAC Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. (April 18, 008) – Without their # 1 player, the Tigers traveled to the 2008 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Occidental entered the weekend as the fourth ranked team, but fell to # 5 Pomona-Pitzer 5-3 in Round One. Oxy rebounded with a 9-0 win over Caltech in the afternoon.

Oxy got out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play in which Dan Ikuta and Vic Sowers and Vince Karlen and Alex Montgomery were successful 8-4, and 8-2, respectively.

The Sagehens proved to be more powerful in singles action, taking four of the five matches.

Karlen recorded the only Tigers victory at the # 3 spot where he defeated Drew Olian 6-3, 6-0. Montgomery played competitively, going into three games with PP’s Grant Friedman, but fell short (6-2, 4-6, 6-3).

Occidental cruised to a 9-0 victory in Round Two as they faced the Caltech Beavers.  

Tomorrow the Tigers will face the Whittier College Poets at 10:00 a.m. in the fifth place match.
