Panthers Knock Off Tigers

ORANGE, Calif. (April 3, 2009) – Instead of taking a day off during SCIAC play, the Tigers decided to continue their tough non conference schedule with a dual match against Chapman University. A bad start in the doubles portion dug Oxy to big a hole to come back from, although they played some gritty tennis in the singles matches, they came up short and fell to the Panthers by the score of 8-1.
Chapman opened up a quick 3-0 lead as they swept all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-4. Then the Panthers made quick work of Oxy’s number one singles player, making it seem like it would be a quick day for the Tigers. But Oxy wasn’t done yet, as Chris Wan came back from an opening set loss to win the second set 7-6, before running out of steam and falling in three. Reid Fenning came out firing in the third position, taking the first set 6-3, before two untimely hitting errors cost him the second set. Fenning played tight in the third, and a late break was just enough for Chapman to squeeze out a 6-4 win in the third. Victor Sowers was able to break though and win easily over the number four singles player, to finally push a win through, although the Tigers had come close in the previous two matches.
Next up for Occidental (3-8, 1-4) will be the University of La Verne 2pm, on Saturday, April 4th, at Claremont Club.
