LOS ANGELES—The visiting Salisbury University Seagulls managed to take both No. 1 matches from the Occidental College men's tennis team, but no more, as Oxy improved to 8-3 on the season behind a 7-2 victory Thursday afternoon at Scholl Canyon.
Salisbury's No. 1 pair defeated Spencer Choy (Aiea, HI) and Stephen Perkins (Seattle) 9-7, but No. 2 Ben Herrington-Gilmore (Stillwater, MN) and Jamie Grossman (Tiburon) won 8-3 and the No. 3 team of Kevin Siebs (Houston) and David Cotton (Anchorage, AK) prevailed 8-1.
When the match turned to singles play, the Seagulls (1-5) once again took the top spot from the Tigers via a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Siebs.
From there the Tigers rolled off five straight victories.
Jordan Brown (San Diego) defeated his No. 2 competition 7-6, 6-4. Perkins won the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-0.
No. 4 Choy and No. 5 Grossman posted back-to-back 6-1, 6-1 wins, followed by Herrington-Gilmore's 6-2, 6-2 victory in the final match of the afternoon.
The Tigers face Puget Sound on Friday and Pacific Lutheran (WA) on Sunday before heading into the thick of SCIAC play the following Friday at No. 15 Redlands.
