LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's and women's tennis teams battled their way through grueling schedules to each end regular-season play with four wins.
The men's team rallied back from a tough 2016 season (0-18) to end the 2017 season at 4-11. The Tigers worked hard throughout the fall and winter on consistency and match toughness and they headed into the spring determined to bring home some W's in 2017. With the help of first-year standouts Vincent Bartholomew, Isaiah Bird, and Ivan Derrick, and returners, Trevor Brown, Cameron Coe, and Isa Kibira, they were able to clinch four challenging wins.
The future of Oxy Men's tennis is bright. Oxy returns the majority of its starters including dynamic doubles duos Bartholomew/Derrick and Bird/Coe, which each clinched five match wins in 2017. Both teams demonstrated their mettle in the last match of the season against Chapman with Bartholomew/Derrick winning 9-7 and Bird and Coe winning 9-8 (8-6).
Kibira led the Tigers in singles wins on the season with 6 overall.
During the fall and winter the Tiger Women focused on expanding their shot selection and honing doubles tactics. These skills served them well as the women's team ended their season at 4-12 overall and improved upon their conference record from 2016 (1-7) to 2-5. Returners Samantha Farrell and Nicole Castro were joined by first-year Maxine Krygier in leading the Tigers in singles with four match wins each.
"Both the men's and women's tennis teams continue to impress me with their passion for tennis and their teammates," Oxy head men's and women's tennis coach Ghia Godfree said. "They truly exemplify the Tiger heart and Tiger grind of an Oxy student-athlete."
