Tigers Compete at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. (April 5, 2008) – The Occidental College track and field teams recorded a plethora of lifetime and seasonal best performances at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.

On the women's side, junior Kera Bartlett continued her stunning season by adding an astonishing six inches to her lifetime best, which is also a school record, in the pole vault. Bartlett's personal best of 12'08" is also a new SCIAC record in the event, and ties for 10th place on the All-Time NCAA DIII Top Ten List.

Sophomore Grace Peck is another woman who has been in great form this season. A week after breaking the school record in the 3000m steeplechase, Peck showed her versatility by dropping down to the 1500m and reducing her lifetime best for the event by 12 seconds to 4:46.39. Peck later combined with fellow sophomores Elissa Chandler, Libby Mislan, and Maddie Weissman to run the 4 by 400m relay in 4:05.01, marking the fastest time recorded by any SCIAC school this year.

Mislan had a busy day. Earlier in the afternoon she set a new lifetime best in the 400m (59.76) and brought her seasonal best in the 200m down to 27.08. In her first meet back from illness, Chandler ran straight to the top of the conference rankings in the 400m hurdles with a 66.26 clocking. Freshman multi-sport student-athlete Season Falkler-Rodriguez was another quarter miler in good form. Falkler-Rodriguez crossed the line in her heat of the 400m in 64.07, a new lifetime best and a fantastic three seconds better than her best high school time. In the 800m, Weissman continued to improve, lowering her seasonal best by a few tenths to 2:17.68.

The men’s squad was led by seniors Kevin Chaves and Alex Ramon who both took to the track for the first time in a few weeks after struggling with injuries. Both Chaves and Ramon (who were each named All-Americans in cross country last Fall) looked to be well on the road to recovery after clocking seasonal bests of 14:47.54 and 14:52.55, respectively in the 5000m. Chaves won the event after a back-and-forth battle leading the pack.

Sophomore Victor Kali, continued to improve by lowering his 1500m lifetime best for the third time this season. Kali's time of 4:08.92 currently ranks him fourth in the SCIAC. Junior Clay Hoadley is another mid-distance runner who lowered his seasonal best in the 800m to 1:57.20, which now ranks him second in the SCIAC.

The Tiger sprinters also climbed up the SCIAC rankings this week after recording a number of seasonal bests. Senior Tyler Phillips led a pack of Tigers home in the 200m in a seasonal best time of 22.77. He was closely followed by freshman Michael Fox (22.97) and sophomore Dorian Vaughn (23.07) who both produced lifetime best performances. Earlier in the afternoon, Fox also recorded a new lifetime best in the 400m with a 51.81 clocking. Vaughn got his afternoon off to a good start as well, running a lifetime best in the 100m at 11.32. First year Chris Wong also produced a life time best in the 400m hurdles as he won his heat in 58.72. He has now dropped a phenomenal five seconds from his first race of the year.
