Tigers Take on SCIAC Opponents at Multi-Duals

REDLANDS, Calif. (April 12, 2008) – Today the Tigers track and field teams travelled to the University of Redlands where the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams met for the first 2008 Multi-Dual meet of the season. Results on both the men’s and women’s sides were strong which was important as today’s competition makes up 25% of the final conference standings.
The Oxy women had five event winners (400m, 800m, 400mH, 4x400m, pole vault) and three individual event runners-up (100mH, 1500m, 4x100m).
Sophomore Libby Mislan was, without a doubt, Oxy's female athlete of the meet. She started her afternoon by running a blistering third leg on the 4 by 100m relay team who recorded a seasonal best time of 50.61. She then dropped an incredible 1.2 seconds from her lifetime best in the 400m to win the event in a SCIAC leading time of 58.58. Next came the 200m in which Mislan crossed the line with a new seasonal best time of 26.90, finishing fifth. Mislan concluded her spectacular afternoon by clocking a 60.4 split on the opening leg of the 4 by 400m relay, a performance that put the Tigers in a commanding lead that they would not relinquish for the entirety of the race.
The other members of the 4 by 400m relay team all produced their best relay splits of the year. Sophomore Maddie Weissman ran the fastest leg of any athlete in the event with a 58.2 carry, while junior Sarah Fischer produced the best 400m of her life to split 62.2, and sophomore Elissa Chandler brought the team home with a lifetime best 60.1 split. The team's time of 4:01.1 is the fastest time in the SCIAC in 2008.
In addition to their relay duties, Weissman and Chandler also sped to event wins in the 800m and 400m hurdles, respectively. Weissman dominated the field in the 800m, winning easily in 2:18.57. She was more than five seconds clear of the second place athlete. Chandler was also an obvious winner in the 400m hurdles. She crossed the line in a seasonal best time of 65.53, the fastest time in the SCIAC this year. Earlier in the afternoon, Chandler ran her fastest 100m hurdles time of 2008 (15.79), which was good for second place on the day and is the third best time in the SCIAC this year.
Sophomore Grace Peck had a busy day in the middle distances. She began her day with a 4:54.46 1500m which was good for second place. She then ran her first 800m of the year in 2:24.25, finishing third. In the field, junior Kera Bartlett was an easy winner in the pole vault needing just one jump to win the competition with an 11'8" clearance. Sophomore Sara Hooker also had a good day in the vault where she added 2 inches to her lifetime best with a 10'2" clearance that earned her fourth place.
Oxy’s men were again led by sophomore Sam Huie who produced a pair of lifetime best performances to place second in both the long and triple jumps. In the long jump, Huie added four inches to his previous best performance leaping out to 22'05", just 1/4" behind the winner. In the triple jump, Huie again almost snatched a victory with his best mark of 45'07.75", just 1/2" behind the winner.
Senior Chris Kyles started his day out with a solid 150'08" throw in the hammer (just 2' less than his lifetime best), before winning the discus with a 144'04" throw. Freshman thrower Dallon Stang also competed well in the discus. Stang's best mark of 132'03" was good enough for third place. Fellow freshman Nick Danielson also had a good day in the throws as he heaved the shot out to 41'05" recording a new lifetime best by over a foot.
On the track, junior Keith Blumenfeld produced a competitive performance in the 5000m, crossing the line in a new lifetime best of 15:46.76. Mike Fox, a freshman, also improved his lifetime best on Saturday as he shaved half a second off of his best 400m time with a 51.39 performance. Fellow first year, Gabe Feinberg also had a break through in the 400m hurdles. Feinberg broke the 60 second barrier for the first time, crossing the finish line in a new lifetime best of 59.77.
