LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 20, 2010) – Occidental senior water polo player Greg Benz was named the Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week for his contributions to the Tigers' 3-2 week, which included a 12-11 buzzer beater to upset the then No. 4 Whittier College poets in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season opener.
Benz had two five goal games as he netted 16 in five games, including an 8-for-8 effort in two games at the Golden West Tournament in Huntington Beach, Calif. on Sunday.
In the Tigers' 12-11 win over WC, Benz scored a game-high five goals while drawing two ejections. He followed up with another five-goal performance on Sunday in an 11-9 victory over Fresno Pacific. In the game he also added a pair of assists, two steals, a field block and a drawn ejection.
The final game of the weekend he added a 3-for-3 shooting performance for his third hat-trick of the week, adding two steals and a couple of drawn ejections.
To start the week off he scored two with three assists and a steal in another exciting win, 18-17 over Vanguard, and added two goals and assist and two drawn ejections against Mercyhurst.
Overall, Benz scored 16 goals with 15 assists and 19 steals.
