Stags stun Tigers in SCIAC play

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 20, 2010) – Tonight at Taylor Pool the Occidental College Tigers hosted the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. The outcome was not as favorable for the Black and Orange as their opening game as CMS controlled the pace of the game from the first sprint and walked off the deck with a 19-9 victory, dropping Oxy to 1-1 in league play.

The Stags stole the first sprint and never looked back, opening up a quick 3-0 lead. Oxy stayed in the hunt, trailing 6-3 after the first period. CMS's Brian Baier scored four of his game-high six goals in the opening frame.

CMS combined to score eight goals over the next two periods while Oxy found the back of the net just three times, trailing 14-6 entering the final quarter.

Oxy added three in the final stanza, but the Stags kept pace with five of their own.

Brendan Whitmore scored a team-leading four goals, one in each quarter and Tai McDermott added a hat-trick for the Black and Orange. Malcolm Clayton and Kevin Coleman rounded out the Oxy offense tonight.

Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week Greg Benz was credited with two assists. Both Whitmore and McDermott drew two ejections in the game.

Kyle Reuther, who split time in front of the cage with Scott Churchman, came away with two steals and tallied eight blocks. Churchman turned away six CMS shots.

Occidental (5-15, 1-1 SCIAC) will travel to Pomona-Pitzer Saturday, Oct. 23 to face off with the Sagehens at 11:00 a.m.
