Tigers Water Polo

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Occidental continued to improve their overall record with a strong performance at the Claremont Convergence tournament, which included a win over NCAA Division I Fordham University.  On the weekend Oxy came away with two wins in four games and the Tigers have now won three of their last five.

Occidental-14 Penn State Behrend-

Oxy had little trouble in the tournament opener against Penn State Behrend, a Division III school out of Erie, Pa.  The Tigers opened up a 4-0 first quarter lead behind two goals from sophomore Kevin Coleman, and a goal apiece from senior Tai McDermott and freshman Dylan Rothwell

Both Rothwell and McDermott would score again in the second quarter, and senior Richard Dybas added a goal to put the Tigers up 7-0 at the half.

Occidental would use a strong press defense and counter attack to extend the lead to 9-0 before PSB could even get on the board. Senior co-captain Brendan Whitmore credited the defensive effort for the teams success.

"We knew that we could make it an easy game if we just focused on our defense and let our offense come from the counters." Whitmore said.  "It was a good way to start the tournament and get some momentum going."

Whitmore, with two goals on the game, was one of five Tigers to finish with a multi-goal effort.  Freshman, Jalen Lubbers also scored twice in the game for his first two scores as an Oxy Tiger.

Oxy's defense accounted for 12 steals, while junior goalie Kyle Reuther finished with a game high 13 saves.

Occidental-11      Fordham-6

Occidental maintained the strong defensive effort in the second game of the tournament, an 11-6 victory over the Division I Fordham University Rams.

It was Fordham that would get on the board first with a goal on their first possession of the game at the 7:45 mark.  From there it was all Oxy.  Whitmore, along with sophomore Jack Stabenfeldt, and freshman Sam Akiyama each scored in the first quarter to give the Tigers an early 3-1 lead.

The second period was a defensive struggle, with Whitmore scoring the only goal to put the Tigers up 4-1 at the half.

The low scoring affair continued into the third quarter until Fordham cut the Oxy lead to 4-2 with a goal at the 3:17 mark. Oxy would then erupt for three unanswered scores, two from Akiyama who notched his third hat-trick of the season.

Senior Tai McDermott, who finished with a game high four goals,  felt that Oxy's ability to out swim the favored Rams lead to the win.

"We just anticipated very well on defense and we did a great job of getting down the pool to create higher percentage scoring opportunities." McDermott said.  "They had a good goalie, but even the best goalies can't block too many point blank shots, and we had a lot of those today."

Leading 7-3 going into the final quarter, the Tigers continued to pour it on, scoring the first two goals of the quarter to extend their lead to six.  Fordham then responded with a mini-comeback, cutting the Tiger lead to 9-6 with three unanswered goals of their own.

Oxy quickly regrouped to score the games final two goals and record consecutive victories for the first time this season.
