POWER PLAY GOALS TOO MUCH TO OVERCOME
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The Occidental College men's water polo team fell behind early against the University of La Verne on Saturday, and did quite recover, losing their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match 15-7 at Taylor Pool.
La Verne took advantage of numerous power play opportunities throughout the game, scoring all four of their man-up goals in the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead after one.
Oxy's only goals in the first came from Tai McDermott (Palos Verdes, CA) and Joe Reynolds (Souderton, PA)—Both finished with two scores on the game as did their teammate Brendan Whitmore (Lafayette, CA).
La Verne outdrew Occidental 14-7 in exclusions and converted nine of those opportunities into goals, while Oxy hit on just three of their power play chances.
Oxy tried to close the gap in the second quarter. After allowing an early goal to fall behind 5-2, the Tigers responded with a Whitmore goal from two-meters to cut the deficit back to two. La Verne scored again to make it 6-3, but once more the Tigers clawed back. This time it was Reynolds scoring off a cross pass from Whitmore on a power-play.
La Verne used a 7-0 run to build a 13-4 lead late in the third quarter. The Tigers refused to go quietly though. Kevin Coleman (Huntington Beach, CA) scored late in the quarter to make it 13-5.
Coleman, one of the few bright spots on the day for Oxy, had a team-leading six steals with one assist.
Oxy continued to struggle with their shooting in the fourth. The Tigers managed to slow the Leopard offense allowing just two fourth quarter goals, but missed opportunities prevented Oxy from mounting any more of a comeback.
