LA VERNE, CA — After a slow start, the Occidental College men's water polo team pulled away for an easy 16-10 win over Caltech in the final regular season match-up of the season.
The Beavers drew first blood at the 5:40 mark of the first quarter, and they added a second goal on their very next possession to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Oxy managed just one goal in the first quarter, Samuel Akiyama (Aptos, CA) converted on a power play, but after the first it was Cal Tech leading 2-1.
The Tigers moved in front mid-way through the second quarter, but Caltech re-tied the game at 3-3 with just over 4:30 to play in the half. From there Oxy took control, finishing the second quarter with three straight goals to go up 6-3 at the break.
After Oxy opend the third quarter with a goal, the Beavers rallied with two quick scores to cut the lead to 7-5, but that's as close as the game would get. The Tigers, using a strong counter-attack, would go up by as much as seven goals later in the game as they cruised to victory.
Oxy finishes SCIAC play with a 3-7 conference mark, good enough for 7th place. The team will begin post-season play in La Jolla, CA next week at the WWPA Championship Tournament. The winner of next weekends conference championships earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Final Four. Oxy will open play against The Air Force Academy on Thursday at UC San Diego.
