Zubrin returns to the Tigers for his seventh season as head coach. He led last years men's team to a 4th place SCIAC finish and a No. 5 national ranking amongst NCAA Division III programs. In the six previous season he's been at Oxy, coach Zubrin has helped turn the Tigers into one of the most competitive teams in the SCIAC/WWPA conference. With four consecutive winning seasons, and progressive improvement in each of the last five years, the Tigers have quickly risen to the ranks of contenders during Zubrins time as head coach.
Hailing from Newport Beach California, Zubrin arrived at Occidental after eight years as a successful high school coach at El Modena and Laguna Beach High Schools in Orange County. Zubrin also represented United States Water Polo as the coach of the Boys and Girls Orange County Youth teams in 1999-2000 where he assisted in evaluating talent for the US National Team.
During his first six years at Occidental College, Zubrin has helped produce 14 different men's and 11 different women's NCAA All-Academic award winners. Additionally, three different men and four different women have earned NCAA All-American awards during Coach Zubrin's tenure.
A graduate of Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Calif., Zubrin went on to compete as a water polo player and swimmer at Golden West College and then at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he was a two-time NCAA All-American Swimmer. Prior to the start of his coaching career, Zubrin played for one season with Queensland, in the Australian National Water Polo League.

Andrew Valdes | |
Following an illustrious career as a player at Occidental
College, Andrew Valdes returns to the Tigers for
his first experience coaching collegiate water polo. Valdes joins
the coaching staff as a part-time assistant. While playing for the
black and orange, Andrew earned NCAA All-American Honors in 2007
and 2008, he was also an All-SCIAC recipient both of those
years. In 2007 Valdes finished among the nations top 15 goal
scorers, and his 92 goals in 2008 put him at No. 2 in the
nation amongst all men's NCAA water polo players. Valdes is
one of the 10 highest goal scorers in the 83 year history of
the Occidental College Men's Water Polo Team.

Jon Bonefede returns to Occidental for his second season as an assistant water polo coach, In 2008 John worked primarily with the goal keepers, a role he will continue with this year while also coaching other aspects of the program. During the off-season, he plays professionally in Australia's National Water Polo League with the Sydney team. Jon is a former MVP at UCSB and former All-MPSF player. Prior to going to Santa Barbara, Jon spent two seasons at Mt. San Antonio College where he earned All-State and Community College All-American honors. He was a two-time All-CIF SS player at Upland HS.

A 2006 graduate of Occidental (BA in History), Scott Shannon was a four year starter and an NCAA First Team All-American and First Team All-SCIAC in 2006, during his senior season on the Oxy men's water polo team. He also swam for four seasons as a Tiger. Additionally, Shannon earned NCAA All-Academic recognition three times as a student-athlete.
The 2009-10 season will mark Shannon's third as a coach at his alma mater. Prior coaching experience includes La Canada High School and the Houston Water Polo Club. In between men's and women's water polo seasons, Coach Shannon also serves as an assistant with the Tigers men's and women's swim teams. In addition to his coaching duties at Occidental, Shannon is currently a second year Law student at USC.
