SALEM, Ore. — Keenan Leary, Brody Barkan and the Occidental men's cross country team punched their tickets to the NCAA Division III National Championship Meet with a second-place finish at the West Regional at Bush Park on Saturday.
It is the Tigers best finish in the West Region since winning it in 2011.
Oxy, which finish fourth in the SCIAC, jumped Whittier and Pomona, finishing second to just Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to earn one of two automatic bids to the race in Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 19. The Tigers also beat host Willamette, the top team from the Northwest Conference.
Leary was Oxy's top finisher, placing sixth overall (25:54.9), and Barkan was second for the Tigers at 14th overall (26:37.9). Thomas Robertson finished 18th (26:48.2), Austin Sankaran was 21st (26:52.1) and Jovani Barajas was 22nd (26:52.8).
All five of Oxy's scorers were named All-West Region for placing in the top 35.
"I'm so proud of the team," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "The men ran their best race when the lights were shining brightest.
