LOS ANGELES — Brody Barkan, the Occidental men's cross country team's top finisher at the Cross Country Season Starter vs. Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne on Sept. 1, was named the first SCIAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week on Monday.
Barkan, who converted from a solid middle distance runner into a cross country standout in 2016, ran the 6K race in 20:55.10 despite temperatures north of 100 degrees at 6:30 p.m. during a particularly hot heat wave in Southern California.
Barkan had the most in the tank and outsprinted some of his teammates, as well as the Sagehens and Leopards, to take second in the race. The West Region's No. 2-ranked Oxy men's team beat No. 1 Pomona-Pitzer.
"Brody started the 2017 season where he left off in 2016," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "He's one of the top returning runners in the West Region and we're excited to see his progress as the year continues."
The Tigers had last weekend off and are back in action on Sept. 16 at the UC Riverside Invitational.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
