Escalante Returns to All-SCIAC Ranks


LOS ANGELES Calif. (May 5, 2009) – Occidental College’s junior backstop Alyssa Escalante earned Second Team All-SCIAC honors for the second time of her career following the Tigers’ successful spring.

The El Cajon, Calif. native started all 37 games for Oxy this season and finished with an overall .286 batting average. She hit at a .266 clip during Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Seventeen of her 28 hits were in conference games and she drove in 26 runs while scoring 14 times (16 and nine in SCIAC, respectively). Three of her homeruns were against SCIAC opponents and she collected nine extra-base hits overall. Escalante also drew 17 walks, 10 coming in league contests.

Behind the plate she was solid, catching all 234.2 innings that the Tigers played. In 130 total chances this season she made just four errors for a .969 fielding percentage. Escalante finished the SCIAC season with 43 putouts and 14 assists. She also caught four would-be base stealers and picked off five runners.

Occidental (14-23) tied for the most wins in a season since 2000 while posting a 3-21 SCIAC record.
