BULLDOGS PITCHING TOO MUCH FOR TIGERSBy Michael Wells Sports Information Director
GAME 1: REDLANDS 8, OCCIDENTAL 0 (Final — 6 innings)
REDLANDS — The combination Kayla Uphold and Gabrielle Sciuto was just too good.
Both Redlands' pitchers teamed up to no-hit the Occidental College softball team in an 8-0 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader with the Tigers at the Field of Dreams on Sunday.
Uphold struck out three batters and Sciuto five. The only two runners to reach base for Oxy (4-24, 2-18 SCIAC) were Jacqueline Shimamoto (Santa Clarita), who walked in the top of the fourth, and Meghan Luera (Pasadena), who reached on an error in the fifth.
Shimamoto, who's hitting .440, had her five-game hitting streak snapped.
Uphold did it from the batter's box too. The junior righty was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Amber Garland (Torrance) pitched 5.2 innings with six earned runs and two strikeouts in the losing effort for the Tigers.
The Bulldogs (28-8, 20-2 SCIAC) scored three runs in the first, three more in the third, and then ended the game via the run-rule when they scored a pair in the bottom of the six.
Janelle Carrasco went 3 for 3 with two runs scored to lead Redlands.
GAME 2: REDLANDS 8, OCCIDENTAL 0 (Final — 5)
Ashley Noone (Orange) had a pair of singles, but they were the only two Oxy hits and the Tigers lost Game 2 8-0 in five innings.
Redlands scored three runs in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth.
Uphold went three innings, Sciuto went two and each gave up one hit.
Linda Park was 1 for 3 with three RBIs to lead the Bulldogs.
The Tigers are back in action on April 20 hosting La Verne at Bell Field.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Friday, but was moved to Sunday after being rained out.
