LOS ANGELES — The Ferris wheel was spinning and the music was blaring in the background in celebration of Occidental College's 125th anniversary, but the school's softball team couldn't come through as the Tigers dropped both games of their Friday afternoon doubleheader against the La Verne (19-17, 11-13 SCIAC).
Both teams wore throwback uniforms as part of a campus-wide day of 1887-themed entertainment.
Game 1 – La Verne 9, Occidental 0
In Game 1, the Tigers (4-26, 2-20 SCIAC) offense was overwhelmed by La Verne's Rebecca Ho and only managed to get one hit off the Leopards' starter. The Tigers lost the game 9-0 in five innings. Patricia Phillimeano (Roseville) hit a line drive to left field in the second inning for Oxy's only hit of the game.
The score line might not show it, but Oxy pitchers Amber Garland (Torrance) and Brittany Vacura (Elk Grove) were solid on the mound. They gave up one earned run each, but the Tigers defense combined for six errors which extended La Verne's innings.
The Tigers pitching duo combined for five innings, two earned runs, and three strikeouts for the game.
Ho allowed one hit, walked three, and struck out five for the shutout. Tara Allis hit a three-run homer in the third to lead the way for the Leopards' offense.
Game 2 – La Verne 4, Occidental 0
The Tigers defense was watertight in Game 2 and starter Garland went the distance, but Oxy offense couldn't break through as they lost 4-0.
Garland scattered seven hits, allowed four runs, and struck out two in a complete-game effort. She also singled in the sixth inning.
La Verne's Amanda Hastings and Raven Freret combined to go for 4 for 6 and drove in the team's all four runs.
The Tigers travel to Whittier tomorrow for a doubleheader with the Poets to finish up the 2012 season.
